Once the tap valve is removed you will be able to remove the rubber tap washer to check its condition.
At this stage, you may not be actually able to see if the tap valve seat has become damaged, but then I never leave it to chance - having stripped down the tap, it would seem a little lazy not to clean up the seat using a tap reseating tool.
